The Voice Behind Chiltern Railways: What It's Like Being the Returning Voice of a National Brand
One of the things I love most about working as a professional voice actor is never quite knowing where a single recording session might lead.
Sometimes you step into your recording booth, deliver a commercial, send the finished audio to the production team and move on to the next project.
Other times, that initial recording becomes the beginning of something much bigger.
That's certainly been my experience with Chiltern Railways.
What began as a commercial voiceover booking in 2025 has developed into an ongoing relationship with the brand, with my voice featuring across national television, radio and digital advertising campaigns.
And there's something rather special about hearing your own voice on a campaign that continues to reach millions of people.
Finding the right voice for a brand
When a production company casts a voice actor for a commercial, they're not simply looking for somebody who can read a script clearly.
They're looking for a voice that feels right for the brand.
Does it sound trustworthy? Approachable? Confident? Does it connect with the intended audience? And perhaps most importantly, does it sound like a real person?
My natural voice has always been warm, slightly husky and conversational. I'm not particularly interested in sounding like a traditional announcer, and increasingly, neither are many of the producers I work with.
There's a real skill in making a commercial sound effortless.
The audience shouldn't feel as though they're being spoken at. Ideally, they should feel as though somebody is speaking directly to them.
That's the approach I bring to my commercial voiceover work.
Why consistency matters in commercial voiceover
One of the most rewarding aspects of the Chiltern Railways campaign has been returning to the brand over time.
A recognisable voice can become part of a brand's identity.
Think about the advertisements you hear regularly. Often, you recognise the voice before you've even registered the name of the company.
That familiarity can be incredibly valuable.
When a brand continues working with the same voice actor, it can maintain a consistent sound across different campaigns, platforms and audiences.
Of course, consistency doesn't mean every performance sounds identical.
A 30-second radio commercial may require a different rhythm from a television advertisement or a digital campaign. The message, audience and creative direction will influence how the script is delivered.
But the underlying character of the voice remains recognisable.
Working with creative teams
One of the things I particularly enjoy about commercial voiceover is the collaborative process.
A script might look straightforward on paper, but once you're working with a producer or creative director, the smallest adjustments can make a considerable difference.
A change of emphasis. A slightly warmer delivery. A different intention behind a particular line.
Sometimes it's about taking something away rather than adding more.
My background as a trained actor has been invaluable here. Acting teaches you to think about intention, not simply words.
What am I communicating? Who am I speaking to? What do I want the listener to feel?
Those questions sit at the heart of a believable commercial performance.
From a single booking to an ongoing campaign
The Chiltern Railways experience has also reinforced something important about the voiceover industry.
A single commercial booking can develop into a much longer professional relationship.
As campaigns are extended, adapted or distributed across additional platforms, the original voice performance may continue to play a role.
For voice actors, this is one of the reasons commercial usage and licensing are such important parts of the business.
For brands and production companies, it demonstrates the value of finding a voice that genuinely fits.
I'm delighted to have continued as the voice of Chiltern Railways, and it's a project I'm particularly proud to include in my commercial portfolio.
